Star Blazers 2199, known in Japan as Space Battleship Yamato 2199, is a 2012–2013 Japanese military science fiction anime television series. It is a remake of the first Space Battleship Yamato television series created by Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto in 1974, known in the United States as Star Blazers. The series is a space opera that was originally screened back-to-back in theaters across Japan, a few episodes at a time, prior to release on home video, and aired on television from April 7, 2013, to September 29, 2013.

Lore & Background
The series is set in 2191, when Earth made first contact with aliens called Gamilas. After a failed peaceful contact, interstellar war began. The Gamilas bombarded Earth with planet bombs, altering the atmosphere and irradiating the surface, forcing humanity into underground cities. In early 2198, Starsha from the planet Iscandar sent her sister Yurisha to Earth with designs for the Dimensional Wave Motion Engine, offering the Cosmo Reverse System to reverse the damage. Earth built a new space battleship, the Yamato, at the same site as the sunken World War II battleship Yamato, to retrieve the system. Over the series, the Yamato and its crew battled Gamilan forces on Jupiter, Saturn's moons, and Pluto, while Gamilas leader Abert Dessler schemed to stop them.

Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is significant as a modern remake of the influential 1974 series, updating the story with new characters, modern tech design, and animation inspired by the original. It was produced with technical consultation from the Maritime Staff Office of the MSDF, and its opening sequence was designed by famous anime director Hideaki Anno. The series was released in theaters as seven films before its television broadcast, and it spawned two movies in 2014: A Voyage to Remember and Odyssey of the Celestial Ark. A sequel series, Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202, was released in theaters from 2017 to 2019. The series was licensed outside Japan by Voyager Entertainment, with Funimation streaming an English dub starting November 8, 2017.
