Lore & Background

Set in a dystopian future where society is overseen by the Sibyl System, the story follows newly appointed agents Arata Shindo and Kei Mikhail Ignatov of Unit One, led by Mika Shimotsuki. The unit investigates cases involving idol Karina Komiya, who is voted Governor of Tokyo, and encounters the Suppressing Action Department of the Foreign Affairs Operations Department, led by Frederica Hanashiro, which provides information about criminals from the secret organization Bifrost. During a cult investigation, Ignatov and Mao Kisaragi are kidnapped, and Ignatov's wife Maiko Maya Stronskaya kills the cult leader, becoming a latent criminal. Bifrost is reduced to three members, and Shindo's late father is revealed to be one of them. The series ends on a cliffhanger as Bifrost member Koichi Azusawa arranges a car accident to attack Yayoi Kunizuka.

Reader's Guide

Psycho-Pass 3 was conceived by director Naoyoshi Shiotani in 2015, aiming to create a Psycho-Pass series primarily relying on a new cast. Much attention was given to the new main duo and the series' social commentary on immigrants in Japan. The series was adapted into a manga and followed by the movie sequel Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector (2020), which closes the main arc. Critical response was largely positive for the handling of several themes and the dynamic of Shindo and Ignatov. The series received better treatment than its immediate predecessor, with focus on new characters and a script tackling modern topics such as immigration, corporate financial mismanagement, and genetic manipulation. Anime News Network found it accessible due to how the cast reacts to the Sybil System, while Comic Book Resources noted it delivers appealing sci-fi action with new protagonists. The series was released on Amazon Prime Video outside Japan and later on Crunchyroll in 2023.
